Renaissance: Four Philosophers
“Give me my robe, put on my crown;
I have immortal longings in me”
Peter Paul Rubens
next to him his brother Philip holding a pen
in his right hand, two other renowned philosophers
looks out with an expression of cynicism.
They
are robed in black with the exception of Justin Lipsius
who is also wrapped in a leopard skin shawl.
There are four books on the table probably of their own writings.
The marble bust above them is Seneca in the image the Greek poet of Hesiod.
The portrait
believed to represent the origins of neostoicism philosophy
reminds me of a painting of Christ and his disciples.
The great historical achievements in literature, religion and science
seem to always be represented by “men in robes.”
