“Calla Lily, Mexico” Tina Modotti (1925)

Calla Lily

In the language of flowers
calla lily means modesty but its white fleshy
petals, erect pistil and sensual curves evoke
a voluptuousness that seems to contradict that.
Whenever I see a painting of a flower up-close
I think of Georgia O’Keefe and wonder what
was their appeal. Why did she paint them, time and
time again? Why was she obsessed with their details?
There must be something more than just color
and shape, something more than floral beauty
but maybe it’s like so many things that attract.
One never quite understands what draws us in
what catches us in its trap of infatuation
“obsession. The worse is over, the worse is yet to come.”
