Carousel

What is the attraction of going around and around
and up and down on a ceramic horse impaled by a metal pole?
One might imagine it’s the movement and the gay calliope music.
But it could be something else, something beyond the excitement
of night lights. It might be the companions who share the night air.
Imagine if you could pick any two people in the world to join
you in a festive evening, who would you choose?
Would you pick your current spouse or partner, a relative, a friend
someone you admire, someone convenient, some beautiful stranger
someone out of desperation. Remember you get to pick anyone.
Because the metaphor is that life is a merry-go-round
relevant not so much in the events that occur
but in the companionship chosen, what we choose might be
where we soar or “where the unspeakable stirs like a stone.”
