“A Tropical Landscape” Carlton Murrell (1993)

Inspired by lines in...

“Manifest” Jane Hirshfield

Landscape

A tropical landscape full of lush greenery enshrines
a distant volcano and includes a cloth line full
of brightly colored shirts and pants stretching
across the entire canvas from left to right.
A landscape painting does not usually have wash
within its frame and certainly not so prominent.
The artist is a black man who grew up in Barbados.
The painting comes a different origin than the fine art
of white European culture and blazes with homespun.
We often carry our art from out of the place of our origin
as “one unfraudulent hope, one affection,
whose minutes, seconds, fragrance, choices,
won’t sadden the heart to recall.”
