“Boat on Lake Geneva” Felix Vallotton (1892)

Lake

What could be more beautiful than a sail boat
on a blue lake with mountains in the background.
Many artists paint landscapes with the intent
of duplicating nature and sometimes they come
close but mostly it’s only a modest facsimile.
Some artists keep trying obsessively to recreate
beauty until they just give up and admit failure
never able to replicate “beauty’s elusive trap”
unable to find the perfect pictorial metaphor.
Some artists find a different pathway to beauty
than replication.
